L’humour en Asie : discours et représentations

A travers des regards croisés, ce groupe de travail aborde les cultures asiatiques sous un angle encore peu étudié en France, celui des discours et des représentations de l’humour.

Les travaux menés s’interrogent notamment sur l’existence, dans ces différentes aires culturelles, de points et de thème communs entre les diverses formes d’expressions de l’humour. Qu’est-ce qui prête à rire ? Comment s’exprime cet humour ? Quels sont les sujets et les modalités d’expression socialement acceptables / inacceptables ? Quels sont les procédés linguistiques mis en œuvre ?

Les questionnements de ce groupe de travail s’intéressent également au contexte politique dans lequel l’humour s’exprime. Quels sont les modalités et l’impact de la censure et de l’autocensure sur l’expression de l’humour ?  Les autorités politiques s’appuient-elles sur l’humour pour soutenir leurs discours ? En sus de ces questionnements sont également prises en compte les représentations humoristiques dans la presse, croisant les représentations de l’Asie en Occident et les représentations de l’Occident en Asie.

From one space to another: translations of artistic practices and objects

The research project “From One Space to Another: Translations of Cultural Practices” brings together researchers from the fields of literary culture and visual culture around the notion of “space”. In the wake of the “spatial turn”, starting from the observation that space and culture are inextricably linked, they question the interactions between a specific object and its environment, from the dynamic point of view of the transformations that affect it on the occasion of a temporary transfer or a more durable implantation in a new and heterogeneous space.

The work on the circulation of ideas between Asia and the West is currently undergoing a wide-ranging revival that calls into question the notion of unilateral influences and posits the transfer as a recreation. However, despite some pioneering work, the question of the transculturation of practices and objects remains relatively unaddressed by Asian studies in Western languages in the literary and artistic fields. In particular, from an intra-Asian perspective (displacement across borders or inscription in a different socio-cultural environment of the same society), on the one hand, and from an approach oriented towards formal questions, on the other. How are forms affected by the host environment? What functions are they invested with? What do they share in common with the previous context? These are some of the questions investigated.

The temporal referent is open: historical or current, diachronic or synchronic. So is the field of the notions of “practices” (custom/craft/technique/productive activity/etc.), “objects” (material/immaterial), “culture” (scholarly/popular/etc.), and “space” (environment/society/etc.). Although it focuses on artistic and literary disciplines, the program, cultivating interdisciplinarity, intends to remain open to other cultural objects.

Circulation of Ideas in Asia

Today, the formation of the political and religious field in modern and contemporary Asia can be examined through the prism of the social history of political ideas, whose analysis of cultural transfers as a phenomenon of the circulation of ideas is profoundly renewing intellectual history. The program aims to contribute to this renewal through a study of the processes involved in translating texts and concepts from European political philosophy to Asia, and through the notion of freedom of conscience.
The first approach is based on the observation that the process of translating European political philosophy into Asia has been underestimated. This has led to a neglect of the study of the phenomenon, its actors and the issues at stake. We have yet to map the circulation of texts and concepts, and the human and material networks behind them.
Within the framework of a social history of political ideas, the perspective of cultural transfer, which problematizes the process of translation, offers new possibilities for conceptual archaeology and understanding of the philosophical field of contemporary Asia. The project arising from this historiographical renewal was inaugurated in 2017 with an international colloquium devoted to Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s political texts in Asia, as well as in the Arab and Turkish worlds (from which issue 30 of the journal Lumières emerged). It continued in 2021 with an international colloquium on the readings and uses of Montesquieu’s L’esprit des lois, which will be the subject of a collective publication, and will address other authors and texts in subsequent years.
The second area of research is aimed at renewing the study of the religious field in contemporary Asia, using the method of cultural transfer and the analysis of lexicon formation through the prism of conceptual archaeology. The object of study here is the notion of freedom of conscience. The approach, necessarily multidisciplinary, will take the form of:
1) an analysis of the formation of the lexicon (not only the notion of freedom of conscience, but also “freedom of belief” and “freedom of religion”) with regard to the translation process,
2) Identification of the actors and networks involved in the national, transnational and intra-Asian circulation of the notion,
3) the appropriation of the concept by states and its relationship with the phenomenon of secularization.
