Scientific description of the program The subject of study in this program is approached from a variety of different theoretical angles. Through various case studies, the program team highlights different interactional configurations. A first angle of approach, in line with the work begun in the 2019-2021 period, considers the link between thought-perception-expression. It deciphers the cause-and-effect relationship that links thought and perception to expression – the creation of knowledge, meaning and even reality – all the more so as subjects create reality as members of a group (symbolic interactionism). Social representations don’t just describe, they also bring into being, and often do so by appealing to tradition, where a “certain past” is normative, recalling the importance of memory in the formula of collective representation. A second approach tackles the question of the link between states and systems of representation in Asian societies. The scientific dynamic in question will seek to deconstruct forms of control or instrumentalization of the latter for ideological purposes or to meet material rationalization objectives/imperatives. Another objective of the program will be to consider the influence of various systems of representation from Asia, through a scientific approach working alongside the research programs within the “Circulations and Influence” group.
